On Monday, July 20th at approximately 11:45pm, during the San Mateo City Council meeting, the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and City Council members unanimously approved the Black Lives Matter Resolution which was co-authored by City Council Member Amo Lee, Former Mayor Claire Mack, BACHAC, St. James AME Zion Church, San Mateo Chapter of NAACP, San Mateo Police Officers Assn., San Mateo Police Chief Barberini and supported by San Mateo Police Activities League, North Central San Mateo Assn. and Pastors from Trinity Baptist, 2nd Baptist and Macedonia Church of God In Christ (see attached). In addition, the City Council is taking under consideration an artistic expression or symbol to represent Black Lives Matter to display in the City of San Mateo. Pastor Bussey from St. James, myself and others gave public comments for the record as well. This was a first step in recognizing and acknowledging racism, brutality and discrimination against Black People and laying a foundation for justice and equity.

Now the real work begins towards actionable, sustainable and meaningful outcomes demonstrating that Black Lives Matter. BACHAC will continue to keep you posted on these opportunities and outcomes and how we are keeping those policy and decision makers accountable to those words of the resolution. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. A special thanks to City Council member Lee for going the extra mile to include the Black community of San Mateo in co-creating the resolution, thanks to all the co-authors, supporters and to all of you who shared and supported it. Lastly, I leave you with my favorite African Proverb that sums it up for me:

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.”
